Throughout different historical periods, the praise and elegy of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) have held significant importance for Arab and Iranian poets, providing an opportunity to reflect their religious, ethical, and social sentiments. A comparative study of Ashura-themed motifs in the poetry of Marouf Abdulmajid (a contemporary, enlightened Egyptian poet) and Mohammad-Hossein Behjat Tabrizi (Shahriar, a contemporary Iranian poet) demonstrates that both poets, employing modern (free verse) and classical (ghazal) poetic forms, have conveyed their profound emotions toward Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and the events of Ashura. The present study adopts a descriptive–analytical approach grounded in library research, with a comparative perspective for analyzing Ashura-related themes, the poets’ techniques of imagery in reflecting the elegy of Imam Hussein, and the influence of the social and political conditions of their eras on their compositions. This analysis focuses on selected poems from Abdulmajid’s Balon al-Ghar, Balon al-Ghadir and chosen works from Shahriar’s Collected Poems. The findings indicate that, while addressing common objectives, the poets sometimes employ similar motifs and sometimes distinct ones. Despite cultural, linguistic, and stylistic differences, they share certain thematic concerns, although their perspectives and modes of expression differ.
