Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya is a prominent character in Islamic history that also has an active presence in some of Persian literary stories as a minor or main character. The literary genre of the collection of stories related to Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya is epic, but it has a dual plot, because the plot of some stories is linked to the theme of Imam Hussein's Revenge and in others, the romantic plot is more prominent. In the list of stories with a romantic plot, Zofunoon-Nāmeh is an independent story that presents an account of Zofunoon's and Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya's efforts to reunite, and in addition to the main events, themes such as facing dangers, overcoming obstacles, and infidels are also discussed. The Zofunoon-Nāmeh is among the stories that have been recorded in numerous Persian, Turkish, and Urdu manuscripts, which indicates its fame and recognition in the Persian language, but any methodological research with a textual criticism has not evaluated the story structure of the Zofunoon-Nāmeh. The present study, by an inductive method and focusing on the report of the oldest existing manuscript of the Zofunoon-Nāmeh, has attempted to evaluate its story elements in order to provide a more detailed understanding of this prose epic. The results of this study show that the Zofunoon-Nāmeh, due to the centrality and prominent presence of its female character, is the only story about "Warlike women / Pahlavān Bānoo-Nāmeh" that is considered a prose counterpart to the Bānoogoshasp-Nāmeh. The narrator of the Zofunoon-Nāmeh has considerable familiarity with epic texts and while maintaining the religious and historical aspect of Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya in the story, he was able to use epic and ayyāri motifs in the romantic plot.
