This study investigates the evolution of the Shiite understanding of the concept of Imamat during the Safavid era. The research corpus comprises the poetic works of four renowned scholars and poets of this period: Razi al-Din Artimani, Saib Tabrizi, Vaiz Qazvini, and Ashraf Mazandarani. Among them, Saib is primarily celebrated for his poetic prowess, while the other three are predominantly recognized for their contributions to Islamic sciences and mysticism (Irfan). The attributes ascribed to the Imams by these figures reflect the collective understanding of the Persian-speaking Shiite community of that time. Findings indicate that none of these poets considered popular consensus (Bay'ah) or public opinion as the basis for the Imam's legitimacy or superiority. Conversely, themes such as inerrancy (Ismah), divine knowledge (Ilm al-Ghayb), and the immediate succession to the Prophet are recurrent throughout their compositions. Notably, there is a significant emphasis on justice as a definitive characteristic of the Infallible Imam, alongside the trait of boundless generosity. Regarding eschatological virtues, the concept of intercession (Shafa'ah) is particularly prominent and frequently invoked. Furthermore, the relative stability of these concepts across successive generations and varying political geographies—including both the Safavid and Mughal empires—constitutes a significant observation of this research.
