The innovations of Shia poetry in the expanse of Persian literature are significant with regards to content and literary styles, so much so that in order to recognize the literary style in this arena, one must have an understanding of the history Shia literature and poetry. Scholars believe that the epics of Faregh Gilani belongs to the Safavid period. This study attempted to shed light on the mistakes of some scholars is determining the literary style of his poetry through the use of the method of descriptive-analytical research and to answer the following questions: what considerations must be made in order to determine the literary style of his poetry? Taking into account these considerations, what literary style the poetry of Faregh Gilani belongs to? The findings conclude that one must take into account the following items in order to determine the literary style: simultaneous investigation of the form and the content, discerning literary style and the literary position of the work, and attention to changes and metamorphoses of literary genres in history. Taking into account the aforementioned items, after research and investigation into the works of Faregh Gilani, it was determined that they belong to the category of “velayatnameh” interspersed with epic themes. Therefore, the poetry of Faregh Gilani can be categorized as epic velayatnameh, carrying similarities to the form, content and theme of those from the Safavid era.
