The issue of pain in life is of the most important questions of the social studies of Shiism which has received little attention. The purpose of this paper is to scrutinize the mechanisms and patterns of pain in Shiism with an emphasis on one the most important sources of Shia, Rouzat-ol-shohada’. This book is not very credible in Shia clerical tradition. However, anthropological investigation of people’s lived experiences and the influence of this book in people’s lives are important. This paper adopts the theory of symbolic anthropology by Cliford Geertz. The findings conclude that the pain of holy figures does not absolve the rest of the believers. On the other hand, their pain is symbolic and representation of the pain suffered by people. In other words, in the mentality and terminology of believers, through elevating and sanctifying the pain of holy figures, a symbolic connection is established between the pain suffered by the people and that of holy figures which result in their exaltation and transcendence.
