This article studies the religious beliefs of Bodagh Azhari Shirazi, the 11th century poet through his odes. Provided that the ode is an intentional and premeditated structure, attributing his odes to the veneration of divine figures, specifically Amir-ol-Mo’menin (AS), is certainly a reflection of the poet’s beliefs. Therefore, the authors have adopted an analytical as well as descriptive approach to Azhari’s odes in order to answer the question; which of the characteristics of Azhari’s beliefs are revealed upon studying his odes and what methods has the poet employed to explain these beliefs. The conclusion is that as a result of the prevalence of Shia teachings during the reign of Safavids, expressing religious beliefs has taken prominence over other subject in Azhari’s poems. In 52 of his 83 odes, he has addressed such subjects as monotheism, description and veneration of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) and the Shia Imams (AS), their prayers and the reciting of their revered attributes as well as their miracles. One could say that over two third of his odes represent his beliefs in Shia Islam and affected by these beliefs, the rare honorary odes he produced were not polluted by base requests. This issue and the manifestation of the poet’s prowess that come to fore in his religious odes represent the heights of his veneration for prominent religious figures. It is certain that the prevalence of Shia Islam and the religious beliefs of Safavid kings has been an important factor in the making of this poet.
