Believing in the king was one of the most significant beliefs of the people in the Safavid period and influenced social actions and daily life at that time. One of the most notable sources in the Safavid era is the remaining poems and verses of the poets of that era. Literary sources can be a reflection of the thoughts of society and movements among people. Saib Tabrizi’s poems, in the position of Malek-o-Sho’arā (poet laureate) of the court and a contemporary of the three Safavid kings, can be a valid testimony, along with other historical data, to understand the position of the king and to believe in him among the people and their lives. According to the research problem, the investigation of popular beliefs about the Shah of Iran in the literary and historical texts of this period, especially Saib Tabrizi’s diwan, to find out what understanding of the Shah and his place among writers, people, and Saib Tabrizi was an example of the society of the Safavid era. This paper tries to answer these questions: What characteristics did the Shah have in the belief of the people and Saib Tabrizi? What effect did these features have on people’s lives? In the people’s minds, the Shah was registered as a holy person, the Marja’ and Naib, the Murshid of Tariqa, a healer and absolver of sins, whose obedience was obligatory, and his edicts even took priority over the Sharia’s. The outstanding characteristic of the king was his justice. By his holy lineage, it was considered an intrinsic matter for him and people’s lives could be changed by any decision of the king and even by his dream. This paper is based on the descriptive-analytical method and refers to literary books.
